The
police in Edo State have shot dead a suspected member of a gang of
kidnappers in Igarra, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state.
It was
gathered that the deceased suspect, whose identity could not be
ascertained at the time of filing this report, was shot after he and his
gang members kidnapped a 58-year-old butcher.
It was
learnt that the deceased and other members of the gang, now at large,
who claimed to be cow dealers, had lured their victim into a forest, in
the disguise of showing him some cows to buy, after they had agreed for a
certain price.
The
58-year-old man was later said to have been abducted by heavily armed
persons, who relocated him to another forest at Ibilo, where he spent
two nights, while a ransom of N5million was demanded from his family.
But the
suspected kidnappers were said to have run out of luck when officers
from the state police command, following credible information, swooped
on them in their hideout, leading to a gun battle where one of the
suspects was shot dead.
The victim was, however, said to have been rescued unhurt.
The
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, who warned that security agency
would not tolerate criminality in the state, assured citizens that the
command was on the trail for other members of the gang
